What is BIS CRS Certification?
The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is a mandatory product registration programme operated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the BIS Act 2016. It specifically covers electronic and IT products sold, manufactured, or imported in India.
Under BIS CRS certification, manufacturers and importers must register their electronic products with BIS and demonstrate that the products conform to the relevant Indian Standards for safety. The CRS scheme was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) through the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012.
Unlike the ISI Mark certification (which involves factory inspections), the CRS scheme is a self-declaration-based registration backed by third-party lab testing. The manufacturer or importer gets their product tested at a BIS-recognized laboratory and then applies for registration with the test report.
Once registered, the product receives a unique R-Number that must be displayed on the product and its packaging. This R-Number can be verified by consumers and authorities on the BIS website.

Who Needs BIS CRS Certification?
BIS CRS registration is mandatory for the following categories of businesses dealing in electronic and IT products in India.
Indian Manufacturers
Domestic manufacturers producing electronic/IT products covered under the CRS scheme must register each product model before selling in the Indian market.
Foreign Manufacturers
Overseas manufacturers or brands exporting electronic products to India must obtain CRS registration, either directly or through their Authorized Indian Representative.
Indian Importers
Indian importers bringing electronic products into India are responsible for ensuring CRS registration exists for the products they import. They can apply as the registrant with manufacturer authorization.
Important Note for E-Commerce Sellers
If you sell electronic products on e-commerce platforms like Amazon India, Flipkart, or Meesho, BIS CRS registration is now a mandatory requirement for product listing. Platforms actively delist non-compliant products.

The CRS registration process is simpler than ISI Mark certification, but still requires careful documentation and lab testing. Here is the complete process:
Product Identification
Identify the applicable Indian Standard (IS) for your electronic product and determine the correct product category under the CRS scheme.
Sample Testing
Submit product samples to a BIS-recognized laboratory for testing against the applicable Indian Standard. The lab issues a test report upon successful testing.
Online Application
Submit the CRS registration application online through the BIS portal along with the test report, product details, and all required documentation.
Document Verification
BIS reviews the application, test reports, and supporting documents. Any queries or clarifications are addressed during this stage.
Registration Grant
Upon successful verification, BIS grants the CRS registration certificate with a unique R-number. The product can now be legally sold in India.
Surveillance & Renewal
BIS conducts market surveillance and may draw samples for testing. Registration must be renewed every 2 years with updated test reports.
Documents Required for BIS CRS Registration
Complete and accurate documentation is the foundation of a successful CRS application. Missing documents are the most common reason for application delays and rejections.
Standphill India's documentation experts prepare, review, and compile all your CRS documents to ensure a first-time approval.

Consumer Confidence
The BIS Standard Mark on electronic products assures consumers of safety and quality, building trust and driving purchase decisions.
Protection from Penalties
Avoid fines up to INR 2 lakh, product seizures, and potential imprisonment under the BIS Act 2016 by ensuring proper CRS registration.
